In an article titled “Green Creatures”, Martha Stewart Living describes how using pet products made from recycled materials is a good way to help cats and dogs shrink their carbon paw print. The magazine suggests nestling your dog in Big Shrimpy’s Nest Bed, noting that it is made with recycled (and recyclable) filling.

“We bought our first Big Shrimpy bed in 2005 for our first Great Dane, Sampson. We previously had gone through 2-3 beds in less than 2 years…either the cat peed on them or they ripped or got so thin it wasn’t any thicker than a blanket. Sampson loved his Big Shrimpy so much that we got a 2nd one for the bedroom, leaving the first in the living room. When Sampson passed, we got a Dane puppy, Louie. He looked so small in the BIG Shrimpy bed, but we knew he’d grow into it. His puppyhood was hard on the bed, but I was able to sew it up a few times and keep using the same one. I love how washable these beds are, too. This past month, we found a Boxer puppy, Roxy. She loved taking over Louie’s bed and found the stitching for the fix that I had made…with her teeth. I must have had something yummy on my hands when I sewed it up. So, we’ve decided to get her her very own Big Shrimpy bed and a new cover for Louie. When the new bed came, the stuffed middle was huge! Roxy has to climb up to get in. I know that this bed will last her lifetime. After spending $$ on 3 beds to get one that lasted for Sampson, we still have his original Big Shrimpy from 2005. And, the 2nd one from 2008. We’ll never buy anything else!An added bonus is that we’ll be sending in the old cover to have you guys recycle it. We’d rather see it reused somehow that taking up space around here. Thanks, guys!

“We first bought 2 Big Shrimpy beds in 2001. We had 2 Newfoundlands and 2 Pugs at the time. It is now 2010 and 2 of the 4 dogs are no longer with us but we still have the Big Shrimpys! We have the “Original” with the sage fleece cover. After 9 years we have decided to replace the covers.

”Over the years I’ve owned a number of dog beds, but yours are the best ever. Not only is it a very nice looking bed, it is of great quality and workmanship, and it washes great. The faux suede Nest bed cover came out of the washer looking brand new. It releases dog hair…hardly any in the dryer! It also zipped back together easily. Our dog loves it and looks so comfortable in it. I was so pleased with my purchase, I’ve ordered a second one for our other dog. I can tell these beds will last and last, but when I need another dog bed, I’ll buy another Big Shrimpy.”

“The Nest is simply amazing. This is no joke. Daisy made it her home within minutes of us laying it down. She has been laying there since we set it up. I thought I would have to get one of her blankets and throw it on to guide her to her new bed. No need for any of that! I love the faux suede and it feels like it will last forever. We love using products we believe in and I love the Nest. Do you make one sized for a being of approximately 220 lbs? (my wife thinks I am joking) I only hope to tell as many about this bed as possible. All bird dogs should have something so comfortable. Thanks again.”

“I just wanted to say how happy I am that I have Big Shrimpy Nest beds! Our sewer backed up with a bad rain storm (didn’t smell like sewage, but was black silty water) and our bedroom is in the basement. Both Shrimpies were soaked, but completely washable, yea! If our [other brand beds] had been down there the insides would have been garbage. It took 3 loads (at 2 hours of wash time on the “sanitary” cycle) per bed, but it was much better than tossing them away. What a great product.”

“I ordered 4 XL Original beds in May for my Great Danes. We own 2 and have fostered for our local Dane rescue for 15 years. We always seem to have a house full! I ordered the beds after seeing our dogs shoving each other off of the 2 Big Shrimpy Nest beds I had purchased at a local pet boutique. We simply needed more beds to go around! Besides the durability and “washablilty”, I love that your bed fabrics and colors look stylish (everywhere!) in our contemporary home. I also appreciate your environmental concerns and use of recycled materials. Before finding you, it had been impossible to find beds large enough for giant breed dogs, let alone ones of any quality.

Anyway, I am belatedly writing to thank you for including the gift of an extra rust colored suede cover in my order. It was a great surprise, and also a very practical one. That was so kind of you. BIG SHRIMPY INTRODUCES FULL CIRCLE™ BED RECYCLING PROGRAM

Big Shrimpy, a Seattle-based company which produces durable, planet-friendly pet products, is proud to announce its Full Circle recycling program, the first recycling program for pet beds. Big Shrimpy’s Original, Nest, and Catalina Beds, as well as Landing Pads and Doodle Toys, are now recyclable.

Although Big Shrimpy owners Bruce and Cici Kelling believe it is quite possible that Big Shrimpy beds would never need to be recycled, they wanted to offer the recycling program to end users. “We’ve always designed Big Shrimpy products to last”, says Bruce, “but if an end user, for whatever reason, wants to part with their old Big Shrimpy bed, we want to offer them an environmentally friendly alternative to the landfill.”

Before recycling, Big Shrimpy encourages end users to extend their bed’s life these ways:

Wash, dry, and re-fluff. Every part of a Big Shrimpy bed, including the SmartFill®, is machine washable and dryable.
Replace worn out parts. Big Shrimpy Original and Nest Bed covers, empty inner liners, and filled inner liners are all available for purchase separately. Worn out parts can be sent back to Big Shrimpy for recycling as well.

To participate in the Full Circle recycling program, end users simply wash and dry all the components of their Big Shrimpy bed and send it back to Big Shrimpy. The outer fabrics and SmartFill are then processed back into a reusable fiber.

Big Shrimpy beds will soon display hangtags describing the new recycling program. Any Big Shrimpy bed ever purchased is recyclable. Recycling instructions can be found at www.bigshrimpy.com.
